Music makes merry and bright Music makes merry and bright, and KUAC FM offers some seasonal highlights.

Chanukah in Story and Song - Fri. Dec. 11, 2p.m.
Narrated by Leonard Nimoy and sung by the acclaimed vocal sextet The Western Wind Vocal Ensemble, "Chanukah in Story and Song" is a unique holiday program that presents 25 eclectic selections, from the Ladino songs of the Spanish Jews and Yiddish melodies of Eastern Europe to modern Israeli tunes and the ensemble's original version of "I Have a Little Dreidel."

365 Holidays with the Canadian Brass - Fri. Dec. 18, 2p.m.
The Canadian Brass performs new arrangements of Christmas music along with classic versions of Christmas and Hanukkah songs they've made popular over their 30 year history.  Meet the players, hear how they celebrate the holiday spirit 365 days a year and enjoy their truly innovative, inspiring holiday music.

A Paul Winter Solstice 2009 - Mon. Dec. 21, 1p.m.
From the cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, Paul Winter, one of the original world musicians, is back again with a unique exploration of the solstice tradition in cultures near and far. Hosted by John Schaefer.

Music makes merry and brightChoirs and Carols: An NPR Christmas - Tues. Dec. 22, 2pm
Hear musicians from around the world in NPR's performance studio as they share special holiday moments. Join host Lisa Simeone for ancient harmonies from Trio Medieval, traditional Latvian carols from the Riga Dom Boys Choir, and a rarely heard Christmas song by Sibelius, straight from Finland's YL Choir. The Pittsburgh Brass unpacks a pair of 500-pound bells to ring in the holiday, and the members of Trio Voronezh tune up a balalaika or two.

Christmas with the Philadelphia Singers - Wed. Dec. 23, 2pm
A concert of traditional and contemporary holiday music. This year, the famed ensemble celebrates Christmas on Logan Square with a program of 20th-century music. Host Ed Cunningham shares seasonal sounds with cherished favorites old and new: from a sonorous candlelight procession to a spirited singing of traditional carols with the audience. The hour-long concert is made complete by the choir's delightful arrangements of traditional hymns and carols.

Christmas with Morehouse and Spelman Glee Clubs - Thur. Dec. 24, 2pm
One of the great holiday traditions in America, the choirs of Morehouse and Spelman Colleges -- two of the most prestigious historically black institutions in the nation -- get together to present a spine-tingling concert program. This enocre presentation features the best works of the last several years. It's a joyous celebration of the schools' tradition of singing excellence, with their trademark mixture of spirituals and carols. Korva Coleman hosts.

St. Olaf Christmas Festival 2009 - Thurs. Dec. 24, 7pm
One of the nation's most cherished holiday celebrations, the St. Olaf Christmas Festival is a service in song and word featuring more than 500 student musicians. Hosted by Performance Today’s Fred Child, the broadcast includes hymns, carols, choral works and orchestral selections celebrating the Nativity.

Christmas Around the Country 2009 - Fri. Dec. 25, 2pm
The best of holiday music-making from coast-to-coast. NPR takes you from churches to concert halls to auditoriums to town halls all across the nation in search of performances that express the best of the holiday season. Lisa Simeone hosts.

Tinsel Tales: NPR Christmas Favorites - Fri. Dec. 25, 6pm
This year a radio tradition continues - stories from the NPR archives that touch on the meaning of Christmas.  David Sedaris, Bailey White, John Henry Faulk--these and other NPR voices, past and present, tell stories of the season.
