Yukon Quest organizers Dick Underwood (L) and Dave Klum (R), of Fairbanks, talk about the early days of the race, at a Quest founders gathering. Klum, a local sled builder, ran in the first Yukon Quest, and also served on the board of directors. Underwood was owner of Alaska Mill and Feed, a race sponsor, and served as president of the Quest board of directors in the late 1980’s. |

Roger Williams (L) and Leroy Shank (R) are two of the friends who came up with the idea of running a thousand mile dog sled race between Fairbanks and Whitehorse back in 1983. Williams, a non musher, was a dedicated behind the scenes organizer during the first 9 Yukon Quest races. He moved to Mississippi in 1993, but returned to Fairbanks for the Quest founders event. Shank, a successful Iditarod competitor, helped put together the Quest from a musher’s perspective, scouting unmapped portions of the historic gold rush route, connecting with communities along the trail, and a myriad of other tasks. |
